When the new year comes around, we all begin to scramble to get our resolutions together so that we can start the year off with a bang.
But, instead of simply throwing out into the world what you want out of the year, take control of how to start the new year with a positive attitude and mindset.
Many people walk around and say the phrase “New Year, New Me”, but it’s unrealistic to take this phrase seriously because do you REALLY go into the new year as an entirely new person?
No. Instead we should focus on bringing in the new year with things and people that uplift you and make you happy and leave behind things that bring negativity to your life.

10 Ways You Can Take Control of the The New Year & Build Positive Habits
1. Self Reflect on the Past Year
A great way to end the year and to start the new year on a positive note is to do a self-reflection.
Self-reflection is like looking in a mirror and stating what you see.
It’s a way to look at who you are and what you have accomplished which can be used as a guide on what you need to focus on more in the new year.
This allows you to be present instead of going through life without the intention to grow emotionally, mentally, or physically.
A great way to do this is to write down questions that will help you analyze how your actions are affecting you and others as well as be aware of how certain situations make you feel.
A few questions you can start with are:
- What have I achieved this year? (Reminder: even the smallest achievements matter!!)
- What have I done to take care of myself (mentally, emotionally, & physically)?
- Make a list of things that make you happy & a list of things that make you feel upset.
You can always just write how you are feeling down and track patterns in your behavior over time, but if you have trouble with doing this, starting with questions can be very helpful!
2. Sit Down & Set Some Goals
We can’t start a new year with a new vision without having tangible goals to work towards every day!
Having an idea of what you want to accomplish in the new year is a great way to have a sense of purpose and drive throughout the year.
But it shouldn’t be as vague as you speaking into existence that you want a million dollars.
Instead, take some time for yourself and sit down to write a few goals down.
Start with 2-3 big, long-term goals first such as starting a business, prioritizing your health, or learning a new language.

Reminder: The goals listed above are just examples, you can write down ANYTHING you want to accomplish in one year or you can even set these long-term goals for many years down the line.
With those long-term goals in mind, you will then create an outline of how you will achieve them!
Write down the necessary steps you need to take in order to reach those long term goals.
For example, if the goal was to start a business the steps may be to do research, get a mentor, create a website, etc.
These steps will be known as your small goals that you will set throughout the year!
To take it a step further, set markers for when you want to achieve these small goals throughout the year such as every two months you are able to check off one of those small goals.
By doing this, you are literally creating a plan for what you can do to achieve your goals by the end of the year.
3. Create A Morning/Night Routine
The next tip on how to take control of the new year is to create a morning and night routine!
How you start and end the day are major factors in how you feel throughout the day.
Therefore, let’s start with creating a morning routine!
Make a list of healthy habits that make you feel good, but are able to be done quickly so you can get your day started!
For example, drinking tea and catching up on your favorite book is a great way to wake your mind and body up!
You could also add exercise, walking your dogs, making a smoothie, watering your plants, or listening to a podcast!
Creating a 30 minute morning routine that is made just for YOU will be helpful in starting each morning positively and it will set the tone for the day!
Most people think that setting only a morning routine is vital, but how you end the night affects your sleep and mental health, which can play a role in how you feel the next day.
Therefore, it’s important to create a night routine as well!
For the night routine, you can create a schedule around things that make you feel relaxed.
So this could be anything from watching your favorite show, meditating/yoga, face masks, or writing in your journal about the day!
The key is to unwind and relax, so take control of your mental health by creating routines that will always make you feel good!
4. Make More Time For You
Have you ever dove right into the new year with a “stay on the grind” mindset and burned out really fast?
When the new year begins, many of us are so anxious to do anything and everything to start the year off right.
But in reality, this is an unhealthy way on how to start the new year.
Instead, you need to create a balance!
It’s okay to work hard and put your energy into professional endeavors, but you also need to make time for yourself.
There’s this saying that you can’t fill from an empty cup and this is the TRUTH!
That feeling of feeling unmotivated and crashing after you put so much work into a project could be avoided by you making more time for yourself.
So plan for breaks, both big and small ones!
It’s important to take vacations and to see family when you can, but it’s also important that you don’t see these big breaks as your only breaks.
Give yourself a 30-minute break in between tasks or if you really need it, make it an hour!
The great thing is that you are in control of how long your breaks should be, so however you’re feeling you can create a schedule around it to ensure that you are catering to yourself always!
Keep in mind that this does not include breaks at a corporation. If you have a regular job, you can still set these breaks, but do it after you get off.
For example, if you work 8 hours a day after you get off plan your breaks then!
I understand that some of you may have other obligations such as cooking dinner or helping your kids with homework.
Even with these obligations, you can still plan a few breaks in between or add something to the task that will make it enjoyable.
For example, if you have to cook dinner then turn on your favorite show or blast your favorite album on the speakers!
The key is to incorporate things that you love into your daily life because work will always be there whereas time for yourself can easily get lost!
5. Be Spontaneous & Try Something New
How do you feel when you try something new?
I mean of course, sometimes you’ll be anxious and scared at first, but after you actually try it you feel undefeated!
Saying yes to things you have never tried is a great way to get some positive vibes going around!
You never know you like something until you try it, so go be spontaneous and do something you’ve never done before!
This could be something as small as tasting sushi or as big as skydiving!
Whatever it is, just try it out and see how it makes you feel!
You may love it or worst-case scenario, you may hate it!
But the important thing is that you put yourself out there which is setting you up in a positive light for the new year because you could be more willing to try new things!
6. Invest In Your Future & In Yourself
Are you that friend that supports and roots for everyone?
If so, it’s time that you have that same energy towards yourself!
There is no reason you shouldn’t be investing and rooting for yourself!
In tip #2, I discussed how you can create a plan for the new year and one goal that you should add to it is one that sets yourself up to invest in a dream you have.
You can’t sit around and wait for opportunities to come to you, so take time out of your day to invest in your future.
You can do this by saving up some money for a house or a business.
You can sign up for an educational course that will teach you a new skill.
You can reach out to a public figure that you look up to and ask them questions about their success.
The possibilities are endless!
So take time to really plan to invest in your future at least once a month!
Those actions will make all the difference and will set you up for success!
7. Organize/Clean Up Your House
Another great way on how to start the new year off on a positive note is to organize or clean up your house!
It’s always a great feeling when you take the time to organize an area of the house and admire the finished product.
It makes you feel so productive and decluttered!
There’s a saying that the cleanliness of your room is a reflection of your mind.
So, by cleaning up around the house, you are setting a better environment for productivity and growth.
Alongside that, having a clean living area can have a positive impact on the rest of your day.
For example, we have all been through the scenario where we are running late and everything is everywhere to the point where we can’t find anything.
This then leads to you feeling flustered which is not a healthy state to be in at the start of your day.
Therefore, before the year even starts, take on a part of the house each day that you can clean up and organize.
Little by little, the house will all come together and you will walk into the new year with a clean house and a clear mind!
8. Create A Vision Board

If not, I highly advise that you try it out!
Vision boards have become very popular lately and they are used to help manifest the things you want in life.
You can create a vision board for the year or you could create one for goals that you want to achieve in 5-10 years.
When I created my first vision board, I did both to have an idea of my short-term and long-term goals and desires.
This can be paired with tip #2 because you can take those goals you wrote down and create a visual representation of them!
Once you create it, you can hang it up somewhere you can see it every day to help you visualize these goals coming to fruition.
9. Practice Gratitude
Practicing gratitude is one of the most valuable tips on this list on how to start the year off right.
You can practice gratitude in many ways such as having a gratitude journal, telling those around you how much you appreciate them, and taking note of the good things happening!
Whether you choose to practice it one way or many ways is up to you!
I believe it’s always good to have a nice balance and to try showing gratitude in ways that you have never tried before.
One of the most popular ways to practice gratitude is to have a gratitude journal.
You can have prompts that you write about every day to practice it or you can simply have a journal and write down 1-3 things that you were grateful for each day!
By doing this, you are pointing out the positive things that are happening in your life and this could be used as a way to put more focus on the good and less on the bad!
10. Accept Positivity & Reject Negativity
Lastly, you need to step into the new year with the mindset that you will accept positivity and reject negativity.
This may seem very vague and I made it that way so that you can apply it in many different scenarios.
When it comes to anything, you should live by this because if you want to have a positive year you need to surround yourself with things that exude that same energy.
So apply this to every aspect of your life and think about the things that are positive and which are negative.
This could be habits, people, jobs, and more!
When you sit down to self-reflect, this is one that you should be thinking about to ensure that as you start the new year, you are leaving behind the parts of your life that served you no purpose.
