The Startup

Cece Ndungu, the founder and CEO of Cece Natural Co. which is a business that sells natural hair tools to help maintain and grow beautiful curls.

Cece Natural Co. was created on October 30, 2020, by Cece Ndungu who was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and currently lives in Manchester, UK.

Her journey started through her personal Instagram account (@cecenatural) where she was creating content about her natural hair.

She was regularly asked what the best practices for natural hair along with the proper tools to use and how to use them.

Cece realized she had a passion for helping her followers find what suited their individual needs and encouraging them to embrace their natural hair.

She stated, “One of the main reasons I liked helping girls with natural hair care was that I had seen so many of them with negative feelings towards their hair. I thought if they had the knowledge to help them take care of their hair then they would grow to love and appreciate it.”

From simply providing a helping hand to her followers, to a growing passion for helping them to embrace their kinks and coils is what inspired her to create her business, Cece Natural Co.

The Product

Cece Natural Co. sells a variety of natural hair tools to help maintain your curls and extensions! Some of the tools she sells are:

  • Detangling Brush
  • Satin Lined Bonnets
  • Wooden Afro Picks
  • Silk Scrunchies
  • Braiding Hair
  • Human Hair Wigs

As stated before, she is based in the UK, but she provides international shipping, so no matter where you are, you can start protecting your hair with Cece’s tools now!

Fun Fact: Cece uses all of her own products which have helped her natural hair to flourish!

Now if you are already natural, you are well aware of the benefits of using a quality detangling brush and satin-lined bonnets.

One item that really caught my attention was the wooden afro picks! I have always used a traditional metal pick or a plastic one from Sally’s.

So I was curious about the benefits of using a wooden pick over a metal or plastic one.

Cece explained that wooden picks are all-natural and biodegradable as well as result in less static and frizz when you are trying to achieve the perfect shape!

She also stated that wooden combs:

  • Distribute natural oils from your scalp to your hair strands more effectively
  • Have a smooth and sleek body
  • Less damaging to the scalp because it has dull edges

Advice To Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Cece just launched her business this year, so she is still learning the ups and downs of owning her own business!

Although she is still new, she has technically been preparing for her business for years by building relationships through her socials, so there are many things that she has experienced that could help one of you who are looking to start your own business!

Tip #1

One of the first lessons she shared was the importance of simply learning.

She stated that it’s not as easy as just writing a business plan and going for it.

It’s important for you to expand your own knowledge and educate yourself in the practices of business!

“There’s so much that goes into this that I wouldn’t have thought about myself.”

– Cece Ndungu

She has taken full responsibility of her own education and actively reads books, listens to podcasts, watches youtube videos, and taken online courses to further her own understanding.

Business isn’t easy, but you don’t need to make it harder on yourself by not using the resources around you because as Cece stated, “There’s so much that goes into this that I wouldn’t have thought about myself.”

Tip #2

Another valuable lesson she has learned along her journey is that there are not enough hours in the day to finish everything!

To help herself with this, she makes sure to create a to-do list and choose tasks that HAVE to be done on that day.

Anything that can wait until the next day are secondary and are put on the back burner until those priority tasks are completed!

But, she still has a job and has to juggle between her own business and her obligations at her day to day job.

So, she aims to have a good structure and doesn’t have a set schedule set up the same for every day because each day is different.

Every day is a little different from the last, so she makes sure to cater her approach to each day as it comes!

Tip #3

For those of you who may be hesitant about starting your own business, she stressed that finding something you are genuinely passionate about will keep you going when times get rough.

“… you need to understand that you will never feel 100% ready and the best time to begin is right now…”

– Cece Ndungu

Once you have an idea of what you want to do, you just have to start! Take that leap of faith and believe in yourself!

She stated that “… you need to understand that you will never feel 100% ready and the best time to begin is right now. As soon as you start, then the lessons will just come and you have to take full accountability for the effort you put into learning about your craft.”

Just start and everything else will come as you progress in your journey!

Tip #4

Lastly, finding a mentor to push you and inspire you along your journey can be very helpful!

As stated before, there’s no need to make this process harder on yourself if you have an unlimited amount of resources to help guide you.

One of those resources can definitely be a mentor because unlike an online course, you can ask them personalized questions and have open communication with them regularly.

Cece stated that you should try to find a mentor if you can — it can be someone you know or it can be someone online!

She stated that owning her own business has been such an intense learning curve and harder than she imagined it would be.

But a positive is that she absolutely loves her products and believes in the message of her brand!

She feels fulfilled by the fact that she is able to create and share high-quality products that have not only helped her own natural hair journey but have also helped many others!

All in all, she would like you to know that, “It’s exciting and rewarding but the journey comes with a lot of tough lessons to learn which will help you grow.”

Cece’s Advice For Your Natural Hair

Being that Cece has made a name for herself as a natural hair enthusiast, I wanted to make sure to share a few natural hair tips for all of you as well!

We talked about what the top 3 necessities are to maintain healthy, natural hair.

What she stated were most important were:

  1. Trim your hair regularly as it tangles easily which can cause split ends
  2. Deep condition your hair because curly hair is naturally dry, so it is always looking for moisture & without it, it is more prone to breakage
  3. Use minimal heat as it strips away the moisture from the hair leaving your curls more prone to breakage and damage.

Now some of you may be saying, “Well what if I haven’t transitioned my hair & haven’t fully embraced my fro”.

She has a little tip for you as well!

You were born with this texture and you’re better off caring for it first before doing everything to hide it.

– Cece Ndungu

Cece would love for you to know that you can always try to use wigs or extensions first!

When you are first transitioning, we all love the look of our hair straight and need time to fully embrace the beauty of our kinks.

So try a wig!

Cece stated that she wears wigs all the time when she wants to change up her look and it’s a great way to keep your hair protected too!

Through experimenting with wigs and extensions, you will have time to see how unique it is and will grow to genuinely love it!

She also explained that there is no better time than now to start embracing the beauty of your afro!

She stated, “You were born with this texture and you’re better off caring for it first before doing everything to hide it.

What Makes Cece Natural Co. Different From Other Brands?

As we all know, there are hundreds of natural hair brands that have the same goal as Cece, so how does her company stand out?

She is different because her main goal is not to just sell you quality products.

Her goal is to guide and encourage you to attain healthier hair which she views as a form of self-love.

Cece explained, “ I want to show you how to care for your hair even if you’re not buying our products. I always hope our customers can learn how to look after their hair which is why we also post tips and tricks to help.”

She clearly has a passion for simply helping those who need more guidance on how to love their natural hair and she builds her content around the needs of her audience which is amazing because she is not solely focused on selling a product!

Future of Cece Natural Co.

Cece made it clear that they have so many different types of tools and products that she is planning to launch, but is making sure to pace herself and take in every lesson that comes with the process.

She of course wants to see her business grow and explains that she has so much planned for the future, but she doesn’t want to spill too much and spoil the surprises that are yet to come!

So make sure to stay tuned and follow Cece’s journey with her business!

I hope you all enjoyed this feature of Cece Natural Co. and will run over to their site to buy one of their products!
