13 Classic Black Horror Movies You Have To Watch

Halloween is right around the corner and one of my favorite activities during spooky season is to watch some spooky movies!

But, I wanted to circulate some classic Black horror movies on the internet because we should be putting the same, if not more, attention into Black films like we do any other film.

The horror film industry is known to be predominantly white and whenever a Black character is casted, they always die first! I don’t know about you, but I am so tired of that narrative!

So here are 13 Classic Black Horror Movies You Have To Watch This Halloween!

Below you will find a list of Black horror movies that are from back in the day and a list of new-age movies that many of us have heard of!!

Old School Black Horror Movies

Blacula (1972)

Blacula is a Black Horror film that was made in 1972

Blacula is a Blaxploitation horror movie that is based in the 18th century that is about an African prince that is turned into a vampire (Blacula) while visiting Transylvania.

He wanted Dracula to help him end the slave trade, but instead, Dracula locked him in a coffin for 200 years!

The movie entails what happens when the coffin is purchased and sent to the city of angels! 

Fun Fact: This movie ignited a surge in Blaxploitation horror movies as it was the first of this theme! 

The People Under The Stairs (1991)

The People Under The Stairs is about a young boy who teams up with two burglars to help get money for his family.

When they break into the family’s landlord’s home, they discover that the landlord and his sister have been kidnapping the boys in the neighborhood, mutilating them, and locking them in a case under the stairs! 

Candyman (1992)

The infamous Candyman is about a college student, Helen Lyle,  who is writing her thesis on the myth of Candyman.

It is known that he is summoned by saying his name five times in the mirror, and when Helen visits a town to investigate it, brutal murders begin to occur in the places that he is commonly known to appear.

Fun Fact: Jordan Peele is releasing a remake of this classic and it is going to be released in 2021!

Tales From The Hood (1995)

Tales From The Hood is about three drug dealers who go to a funeral parlor to pick up drugs and while at the parlor, the funeral director tells them four creepy stories about a few of the people he has helped put to rest.

Leprechaun In The Hood (2000)

Leprechaun has been many places, but my favorite has always been when he went to the hood! 

Leprechaun In The Hood is about three rappers who wanted to get revenge on a pimp who owed them money by stealing a load of his jewelry.

One of the necklaces they stole is how they unleashed Leprechaun!

The movie shows what happens once the Leprechaun is out and about.

Fun Fact: There is a sequel to this movie called Leprechaun Back 2 Tha Hood!

Bones (2001)

Bones is based in 1979 where the main character Jimmy Bones is murdered by a corrupt cop.

After 20 years, his spirit is awakened and he seeks revenge on everyone who betrayed him and got him murdered.

New School Black Horror Movies

Get Out (2017)

When Get Out was released, it was the most talked about movie of that year and put Jordan Peele on a pedestal as a director and writer.

Get Out is about a Black man who is in an interracial relationship that goes to visit his girlfriend’s family for the weekend.

He notices her parents behaving oddly as well as their friends and he assumed it was because they were nervous about their daughter being in an interracial relationship.

But what he finds out is very unsettling and twisted. 

Ma (2019)

Ma is about a Black woman who lives alone and becomes friends with a group of teenagers who use her to buy alcohol which leads to her allowing them to throw a party at her house.

As she becomes obsessed with her new “friends”, she turns very violent.

Sweetheart (2019)

Sweetheart is about a Black woman who washes ashore a deserted island after her boat is destroyed in a storm.

As she tries to survive, she discovers that there is an unknown monster that comes out at night. 

Us (2019)

Us is another one of those twisted Jordan Peele movies that start-up deep conversations about the hidden messages within the storyline. 

This movie is about a Black family who are having a vacation with their friends and the sunny vacation quickly takes a turn for the worst when their evil doppelgangers.

The movie entails many dark truths and makes you wonder if those truths relate to you.

Antebellum (2020)

Antebellum is a different type of horror movie as it is inspired by the horror films by Jordan Peele.

It is about a Black author who has to face the dark realities of the past of our ancestors in what seems to be a bad dream.

As she goes back and forth between being a slave in the past and an author in the present day, she comes to realize a dark reality about what is really happening. 

Spell (2020)

Spell is about a man and his family traveling to attend a family member’s funeral.

As they are flying, their plane crashes and the man is being held captive in an attic of a woman who practices Hoodoo.

As she has a strong over him and his family through dark magic, the movie shows how he tries to fight it and escape.

This movie comes out on October 30, 2020, on platforms such as Apple TV, Google Play, & Prime Video! Just in time for Halloween! 

His House (2020)

His House is a Netflix film that is about a couple from South-Sudan who is trying to adjust to their new lives in the United Kingdom.

As they are getting accustomed to their new home, they feel a dark presence lurking in the walls of the house. 

His House also releases on October 30, 2020, on Netflix! Make sure to check it out!
